Treadmill Running vs Outdoor Running
When people want to incorporate running into their workout regime a common question they have is, whether it is better to run on a treadmill or outdoors? Over the years there has been a lot of research surrounding this which has concluded that they are equal in effectiveness depending on the settings you have on your treadmill. Despite this, there are a number of advantages and disadvantages unique to both and they are important for any runner to consider before beginning their workout. Here we will explore both sides so that you can be well informed as to which best would suit your workout.
Running on a Treadmill
The number one reason people will often choose a treadmill over running outside is because of bad weather. If it is too hot outside you run the risk of becoming severely dehydrated and having a poor workout. Equally if the weather is too wet or cold you may have a difficult time keeping your balance or even having clear visibility. Either of these weather conditions can be extremely dangerous and so using a treadmill can be a great alternative. You will be able to have a productive work out without getting sick or injured because of the elements.
Using a treadmill also allows you to customise your workout to suit your needs and ensure you are achieving your goals. Most treadmills come with a number of different settings, the most basic being able to alter the incline of your run and the speed at which you are running. These can be manually changed throughout your workout so if you need to slow down you can. You will also find that there are a number of programs built into treadmills that can help you achieve different goals. These can range from fat burning to increasing your heart rate or even simulate different terrains such as rolling hills.
If running is a large part of your workout you may be interested in participating in marathon runs in the future. As part of this you will learn that you don’t really have time to stop for water or food and will consequently need to learn how to drink and eat whilst you are running. Treadmills can be a great way to help you learn how to do this in a number of different terrains whether it be up or downhill.
One of the biggest problems runners find with treadmills is that it is very easy to set your speed and incline and leave it at those settings for your entire workout. Whilst you may feel you are getting a good workout you are actually not learning how to pace yourself properly in running outside of the treadmill. If you are running is training for a race or marathon you are likely to struggle on the day as your natural pacing instincts will be completely off and you will not perform as well.
One of the biggest advantages to running outdoors is the scenery that you can’t get indoors. Running outsides allows you to experience nature and achieve a more of a sense of peace in doing so. If you are on a treadmill it can become quite boring with nothing to look at apart from the clock and your stats which can move quite slowly if you’re looking so often. It can also be problematic again if you are planning to take part in a race or marathon as it impairs your sense of visualisation.
If you are outside running you are able to see he finish line in the distance which allows you to push yourself and pick up the pace. If you are on a treadmill you cannot see this and therefore it becomes a lot harder on you mentally to keep going.
